About
Imagine if a Black girl were allowed to take the stage like Tommy, Pippin, and Candide.
Dee, a new musical, tells the story of a dream-bopping Missy Supreme, who swings between delusional self-glory and a loving selflessness. Dee is a Black girl from Detroit who imagines eating Madonna for breakfast, Diana Ross for lunch, and Aretha Franklin for dinner. And she still ends up hungry. She loses her mother and ditches her boyfriend in her quest to conquer the world. But while conquering the world, she becomes her own Armageddon again and again. The only thing that saves her are the songs that cut through all her bullshit, songs that call up the promise of jazz and Church composed by trumpet-playing Gotham King Alphonso Horne. To love herself, she must prove the world wrong - in her mind, the world doesn’t give two shits about her. She knows it will cost a lot to prove the world wrong. But the power of this young girl’s willful imagination will not be denied.
The girl has a dream with a capital D.
